Alice Rose Mahon joined the Lord and her beloved parents James Francis Mahon Sr. and Alice Mahon (Gaffney) in heaven on March 15, 2013. Born on Aug. 6, 1931 in New York, Alice spent much of her life on Long Island, NY, moving to Venice, FL after her retirement. She spent the last two years in Lynchburg, VA near her extended family. Alice loved children and taught kindergarten and first grade students at the Cherry Lane Primary School in Carle Place, NY for over 30 years. Recently reflecting on her long career as an educator, Alice realized that she had been responsible for teaching hundreds of students how to read and write. Her love of children was clearly evident in the joy she experienced when visited by her great great niece and nephew, Claire and Nicholas. A well-educated woman, having earned a Master’s degree in Education from SUNY Brockport, Alice traveled the world with members of her close-knit group of girlfriends and enjoyed a multitude of cultural experiences. A generous person, she invited her nieces to share in her travels and made numerous trips with family to Ireland, one of her favorite destinations. Always an active parishioner in the Catholic Church, Alice devoted much of her time to activities at the Epiphany Cathedral in Venice, FL including the Eucharistic and Arimathean Ministries. Alice is survived by her older brother James Mahon Jr. and his wife Irene (Shields), her younger brother John Mahon, her many cousins, her devoted nieces Colleen, Sharon, Patty and Nancy, nephews John, James, and Joseph, a collection of great nieces and nephews, and her great great niece and nephew. In addition to her beloved family, Alice leaves behind several close, longtime friends, and her friends and caregivers at The Summit in Lynchburg, VA. Alice’s family would especially like to thank all of the fine people at The Summit for their patient and kind care of Alice over the last two years. Mass of Christian burial at the Holy Name of Mary Catholic Church, 1307 Oakwood Street Bedford, Virginia 24523 was held on March 23, 2013. In lieu of flowers, Alice’s family requests that you make a donation to the charity of your choice in her memory.
