George William Hughes, Jr., 82, of Big Island, died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013. He was born in Lynchburg on Dec. 31, 1930 a son of the late George William Hughes, Sr. and Lula Glass Hughes. George was a retired U.S. Navy
Veteran and he also retired from the City of Bedford Public Works Department. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Marie Markham Hughes; three children, Kenneth G. Mitchell, II; Jeanne Marie Watson and husband, Christopher; Connie Nicely and husband, Vincent; grandchildren, Timothy and Terry Laughlin; Katherine and Amanda Watson; Aaron and Ashley Nicely; two great grandchildren, TyLee Laughlin and Chase Laughlin; his sister, Nancy Hughes Thomas and his aunt, Barbara Mae Fisher; many nieces, nephews, friends and family. A special thank you to the staff at Oakwood Manor. Memorials may be made to the Big Island Emergency Crew or the Big Island Fire Department. A funeral service was held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013 at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Carey C. Snellings officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery.
