Lucille McMillan

Lucille McMillan has packed her bags and prepared her boarding pass for her final, long awaited journey. She left for this last journey on March 7th, 2013. Born Lucille Elizabeth Richardson in Bedford County on Nov. 1, 1915, she was the 9th of ten children of James Colon and Adra PobstRichardson. She was the devoted and loyal wife of Fenler William McMillan for 57 years. Lucille was an avid traveler and visited many places in her 97 years on this earth, including many European countries, Egypt and the Holy Lands. She visited much of Canada and all 50 United States. Lucille and Fenler traveled to Alaska for their 50th anniversary and her last state, Hawaii, was checked off with a 90th birthday trip with her four children. She traveled to St. Maarten in the Caribbean with her son Dennis, at the age of 94. She especially enjoyed sharing her travel photos with school and church groups. Lucille owned and operated a beauty shop in Montvale, and in her homes in Bedford, and Poquoson. She enjoyed painting, writing, and reading and wrote and published two genealogy books on her family. Lucille organized and managed the Pobst/Richardson family reunion in Thaxton, for nearly 20 years during the 70’s and 80’s. Lucille and Fenler lived much of their lives in the Bedford area with a short stint in Portsmouth. In ’59 they moved to Poquoson, and built a home there. Lucille was active in the formation of several churches in this area and was a life long believer. She especially enjoyed her many church friends; many of which made it possible to continue to attend church after she could no longer drive. Lucille could be found working long hours at the polls during elections. Awaiting her arrival at her final destination are her parents, her husband Fenler, and all 9 of her siblings. She managed to spend more time preparing for this trip than any of her siblings. She leaves behind to continue their travels a long line of travel enthusiast: son, F. Wayne McMillan (Hattie) of Forest, daughter, Nancy McMillan of Troutman, NC, daughter, Marie Firman of Grafton, and son, J. Dennis McMillan (Patti) of Red Feather Lakes, CO; ten grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren. A bon-voyage party was planned for 2-3 P.M. with a memorial service at 3 P.M. on Saturday, March 9th, at Claytor Rollins Funeral Home, 836 Poquoson Avenue, Poquoson, Virginia. With embarkation at Virginia Memorial Park in Bedford, Virginia at 3 P.M. on Sunday, March 10th where she took her first-class seat on a private charter along side her loving and patient husband. In lieu of flowers a memorial contribution can be made to your favorite charity or church. Online condolences to .
