Carl Roger Grant died peacefully at home on Jan. 15, 2016. Roger was the son of Carl T. and Lois C. Grant. In addition to his parents, Roger was predeceased by his first wife and the mother of his children, Betty Harris Slusher. Survivors include Roger’s wife Jane J. Grant, daughter Sharon G. Thompson, two sons and daughters-in-law, Steven R. and Becky H. Grant and Brent T. and Dana M. Grant, and seven grandchildren, Joy, William, Staci, Tucker, Bryce, Casey and Skye. Also surviving are two brothers, David (Faye) Grant and Harry B. (Ruby Neale) Grant; two men he considered sons, Toby Thompson and Sam Williams; a special family friend, Anthony Fisher; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Roger was born in Bedford County on June 29, 1933, and was a lifelong farmer. In addition to his farm, Roger loved hunting, fishing and gardening. He was a member of Thaxton Baptist Church, Bedford Moose Lodge and The Ponderosa Club. Roger served many terms on the Boards of Directors of Southern States Bedford Cooperative and Bedford County Virginia Farm Bureau. A celebration of life service was held on Sunday, Jan. 17, 2016, at 3 pm at Thaxton Baptist Church, 1067 Penicks Mill Road, Thaxton, VA 24174. Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of Thaxton Baptist Church; St Labre Indian School, Ashland, MT 59004; or Red Cloud Indian School, 100 Mission Drive, Pine Ridge, SD 57770-2100.
