Clarence Edward Mathews, 87, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, April 1, at his home. He was preceded in death by his wife, Donna Saunders Mathews, and by his parents, James and Eva Mathews. He is survived by his brother, Lloyd Mathews, of Pulaski, Virginia, and a sister-in-law, Etta Mathews, of South Hill, as well as nieces and nephews. He was a devoted member of West End Presbyterian Church. He served in the US Army during World War II, counting this service as one of his highest accomplishments. After attending the University of Richmond and graduating from Lynchburg College, he taught for 30 years in Bedford County Schools, where he formed lasting ties with students and colleagues. He was a dedicated sports fan, especially of the Salem Red Sox and the University of Virginia. Funeral Services were held 10 a.m. Monday April 7 at Oakey’s North Chapel with Pastor Tony Ward officiating; burial to follow with Honors at 12:30 p.m. at Spring Hill Cemetery in Lynchburg. The family requests that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to the Donna S. Mathews Scholarship Fund at the College of Health Sciences 101 Elm Ave., SE Roanoke, VA 24013.
