Claude Thomas Fariss, 79, of Forest passed away Wednesday, Dec.24, 2014 at his residence. He was the loving husband of Betty Custer Fariss for over 55 years. Born Sept. 23, 1935 in Bedford County, he was a son of the late Elton Price Fariss and Lillie Popst Fariss. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by three brothers, Jack Fariss, James Fariss and Henry Fariss; a daughter-in-law, Pam Fariss and a brother-in-law, Gilbert Pugh. Claude was a 1954 graduate of Huddleston High School and proudly served his country as 1st Lieutenant in the Army National Guard. He was a retired Communications Technician with C & P Telephone (Verizon) with 32 years of service and was a longtime member of Timberlake Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, Trustee, Board Member and Sunday School Teacher. He was a Master Automotive Mechanic by hobby who was very gifted at fixing things. He enjoyed landscaping especially growing roses and was an avid tennis player. He loved spending time with his family and many friends. In addition to his wife he leaves to cherish his memory four sons, Thomas Eugene Fariss and wife, Donna of Lynchburg, Stewart Allen Fariss and wife, Joyce of Charlotte, NC, Roger Wayne Fariss of Madison Heights and Danny Lee Fariss and wife, Erica of Glen Allen; two sisters, Mary Carson and husband, Bill of Harrisonburg and Alta Pugh of Bedford; six grandchildren, Candice Bowman and husband, Kyle, Zachary Fariss and fiancé, Hailey, Caitlin Conklin and husband, Caleb, Amanda Fariss, Trevor Fariss and Cassidy Fariss; two great-grandchildren, Parker Bowman and Elliott Bowman; his canine companion, Russell; and many other relatives and friends. The family received relatives and friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m, Friday, Dec.26, 2014 at Heritage Funeral Service, 427 Graves Mill Rd. Lynchburg. A Celebration of Claude’s Life and Faith was conducted 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2014 in the chapel of Heritage Funeral Service by Pastor Bryan Ferrell. Burial followed in Virginia Memorial Park with Military Honors rendered by American Legion Post 16. The family would like to thank Dr. John MacNeill and his staff and Gentle Shepherd Hospice for their loving care and support.
