George Frederick â€œFreddieâ€ Massie, 71, of Big Island, died Saturday, January 25, 2014 in Lynchburg General Hospital. He was born in Lynchburg on Feb. 18, 1942 a son of the late Hunter Talmadge Massie and Bessie Campbell Massie. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Byron, Alvin, Radford and H.T. Massie; a sister, Dorothy Peters. He retired from Georgia-Pacific after 39 years. He was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church and he served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He is survived by his wife, Susan D. Massie and her son, Kevin Peterson; four daughters, Kim Hatcher, husband Walter; Karen Wittman, husband John; Angie Anthony, husband Joey; Gina Judge, husband Robert; his grandchildren, Katelin Yacovelli and her husband Jacob, Sam Hatcher, Noah Lawing, Christopher and his wife Brittany, Heather, Hannah and Lydia Anthony, Macy Judge; his great-grandson Carson Anthony and numerous relatives and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hunting Creek Baptist Church food pantry, 15455 Big Island Hwy, Big Island, VA 24526. A celebration of his life was held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014 at Hunting Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Carey Snellings, Rev. Mike Fitzgerald and Rev. Joey Anthony officiating.
