Charles Whitney Grove, 93, from Groveland Farm in Forest, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014 in Lynchburg General Hospital. Whitney was born in Waynesboro, on Aug. 28, 1920, the son of the late Raymond Charles Grove and Mary Glena Grove; he was the second of eight children. Whitney was manager of Old Elkton Farm and Creswell Farm from 1940-1958. He established Groveland Farm in 1959 with 40 Angus cattle which grew to over 300 head. He helped to organize and served as president of the Forest Volunteer Fire Department. He was a founder, and served as chairman of the board for the Community Bank of Forest, now BB&T. He served on the Bedford County Board of Supervisors as chairman of the board. He was a life time member of the American Angus Association. He was an active member and past president of the Virginia Angus Association, he was an active member of Forest United Methodist Church and he served in many leadership roles. He was a member of New London Ruritan Club, Southern States Cooperative, Bedford County Farm Bureau, and Central Virginia Feeder Calf Association. His family will remember him as a stalwart man of few words that could bring laughter to an entire room. He relished oysters, grew the best tomatoes, loved his Angus cows and only drove John Deere tractors. He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Doris Henderson Grove; a daughter, Glenna Housman and her husband, John of Forest, and their two children-Whitney Blandford and her husband, Jason of Warrenton, and Carrie Housman of Alexandria; and a son, Charles “Chuck” Whitney Grove, Jr., and his wife Ruth, of Forest, and their two children â€" Jake Grove and his wife Katie of Forest, and Rachel Dalton and her husband Douglas of Lynchburg. Whitney is also survived by four great-grandchildren: Emma Whitney Grove, Caroline Grace Grove, William Beckett Blandford and Easton Grove Blandford- a third great-grandson is expected in February. Whitney is also survived by three siblings, Mildred Weems of Waynesboro, Carroll Grove and his wife Judy of Waynesboro, and Lucile Levan of Southern Shores, NC. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Conrad and Kenton Grove, and two sisters, Phyllis Wright and Jean White. A celebration of Whitney’s life was conducted at 2 pm on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014 at Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. William T. Burleigh officiating. Interment followed in Virginia Memorial Park.
