Harlan G. Watson, 82 of Bedford County, passed away Monday Feb. 8, 2016 at St. Francis Nursing Center. He was born on Thursday Oct. 5, 1933 in Bedford County, a son of the late Harlan A. and Nancy Catherine Watson. Harlan was fighting cancer when his heart gave out. He was also preceded in death by his brothers William, Everett and Charles Watson, his son Curtis G. Watson, and grandson Paul Robert Gurdal. He is survived by his brother David Watson of Bedford County, his ex-wife Vertie L. Watson; his daughter Mary K. Haughey and her husband Timothy of Hampton, VA; his daughter Reba Gurdal and her husband Robert of Forest, VA; his daughter in law Mary D. Watson of Bedford County, her daughter Nora, and Nora’s children; his grandchildren Samuel Lynch of Hampton, VA; Alan Gurdal of Forest, VA; and James Gurdal of Newport News, VA. Harlan was known as Papa Watty at Portsmouth Beltline Railroad, where he worked as an engineer. During that time he lobbied to keep the railroads strong in the Tidewater VA area, and had the sad privilege of retiring the last steam engine. He was also a carpenter and helped build houses in the Tidewater area. Later in life he became a truck driver, and enjoyed seeing many different places across the US. He was an avid history buff and wherever he was, he could tell about the history of the place. He also loved explaining how mountains and rolling hills were formed based on glacier movements and other geographical events in the earth’s history. He was a proud member of the Teamsters Union. The family request memorials be made to the or to Centenary UMC of Lynchburg, VA. A remembrance service will be held Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016 at 11 AM at Centenary UMC located at 1501 Rivermont Ave, Lynchburg, VA 24503. Friends and family are invited to share stories if they would like to at the service. If you cannot attend and would like to share something, please contact the church. There will be a reception in the church fellowship hall after the service.
