Lee Jackson Carter, 100, of Bedford, died peacefully at Campbell's Rest Home on Wednesday, July 11, 2012. He was born on Friday, April 5, 1912 in Leesville, the third child and second son of the late Alexander Mortimore Carter and Ella Burnette Carter. In addition to his parents, Mr. Carter was preceded in death by two brothers, Boyce Carter and Lloyd F. Carter and four sisters, Elizabeth Huddleston, Bernice Vaughn Adams, Eva Pierce and Nora Blackstone. He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of sixty-seven years, Lillie Updike Carter; a son, James L. Carter and wife, Janet of Bedford; daughters, Virginia Ella Carter of Charlottesville, Lois C. Cooper and husband, Brian of Midlothian. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Ben Cooper, Grant Collins, Grace Cooper and a sister, Doris Reynolds of Bedford and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Carter was a lifetime farmer and a retired rural mail carrier. After his retirement, he enjoyed selling fresh fruits and vegetables at the Bedford Farmers Market for many years. He was a longtime member of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer and trustee. He was also a 1931 graduate of Bedford High School. The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff of Campbell's Rest Home for their loving care of Mr. Carter during his final months. Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 11 am at Hickory Grove United Methodist Church, 2028 Skinnell Mill Road, Bedford, with the Rev. Jack Davis and Rev. Steve Turner officiating. Interment followed in Hickory Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery. Arrangements by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
