Maria Hayden Mitchell, 75, of Bedford (Bunker Hill Community), went home to spend eternity with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, June 9, 2012. She passed away peacefully at her home. Mrs. Mitchell was born on Nov. 22, 1936 in Bedford County and was a daughter of the late Mack Hilber and Rebecca Arrington Hilber. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and father of her children, David J. Hayden Sr.; her second husband, Paul Mitchell; a daughter, Sheila Cunningham; brothers Mack and Robert Hilber; and a sister, Elnora Jefferson. Mrs. Mitchell, better known as "Ms. Maria", was a cosmetologist in Bedford County for many years. It was in this profession that she formed many life-long friendships. She was also a very faithful and active member of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church. Over the years she held many positions in the church, was a member of various organizations, sang in the church choir, and was also a Sunday School teacher. Ms. Maria loved her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Surviving to cherish her memory are her loving and devoted children, David (Sue) Hayden, of Bedford, Janet (Joe) Mills, of Thaxton, Frederick (Cheryl) Hayden, of Bedford, Timothy (Phoebe) Hayden, of Bedford; a "special " daughter, Felicia Johnson; three brothers, James (Madeline) Hilber, Marean (Marie) Hilber and Edward Hilber; three sisters, Mattie H. Morris-Johnson (Arsbon), Florence (Francis) Spinner and Sadie (Joe) Taborn; devoted brother-in law, William (Priscilla) Mitchell; numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. Much love and appreciation is offered to the many caregivers that helped make it possible for Ms. Maria to stay in her home during her illness. It would not have been possible without each of you. A celebration of her life was held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church in Bedford, conducted by the Rev. Jesse Waller and the Rev. Johnny Hunt. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Arrangements by Bedford Funeral Home.
