Mattie Stevens Harkey, 83, of Evington, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2013. She was born in Bedford County on Oct. 4, 1930 a daughter of the late James Elmer Stevens and Annie Overstreet Stevens. She was a seamstress and interior designer and co-founder of Harkey Interiors of Bedford. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by four sisters, Ollie Stanley, Joyce Monday, Lula Stanley and Catherine Stevens; two brothers, Raymond Stevens and Robert Stevens. She is survived by her husband, Billie Joe Harkey; two sons, Larry Bradley and wife, Cindy of St. Augustine, FL; Steve Bradley of Sarasota, FL; four grandchildren, Brian, Eric, Amy and Stephanie; eight great-grandchildren, Jasmine, Zachary, Wyatt, Claire, Tyler, Joel, Nicholas and Aden; her sisters, Frances Burton, Nancy Orange, Betty Shelton; her brother, Morris Stevens. Mattie was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother to her immediate and extended family. The family would like to thank the Doctors, nurses and staff of Lynchburg General Hospital Oncology Unit for all their wonderful care. A funeral service was held 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29, 2013 at Burch-Messier Walnut Street Chapel, 1235 Walnut Street, with Chris Burch presiding.
