Melvin Fielder, 91 years old, passed through the pearly gates on Oct. 8, 2016, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. He fought a long hard battle of Alzheimerâ€™s and died of complications from pneumonia. He is preceded in death by his only son, Stuart L. Fielder; father and mother, Russell and Euba Thurman Fielder; brother, James Fielder; two sisters, Ruby F. Gibbs and Marjorie F. Atkins. Melvin loved fishing and hunting in his younger years. He loved helping family members and spending time with his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.Melvin served his country in the U.S. Army. He leaves behind the love of his life, Australia Orange Fielder; two daughters, Janice F. Abbott, Pam F. Cyrus and fiancÃ©e, Sterling Ewers; seven grandchildren, Brian S. Inge and Eric, Greg Cyrus and wife, Wendy, Kenny Cyrus and wife, Amy, Neil Abbott and wife, Deborah, Erica Whorley and husband, Jonathan, Kelly Fielder, Crystal Fielder and Rob; great-grandchildren, Brooke Cyrus and Scott Cyrus, Ken Cyrus, Abagail and Jacob Henson, Brent Abbott, Cameron Bigart, Mikailyn and Brandon Rommell, Annabelle, Josephine, Madeline Whorley; brother, Thomas Fielder, and a host of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016, at Burch-Messier Walnut St. Chapel, with Rev. David McCord officiating. Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.
