Willard Albert King, devoted husband and father, age 86, passed away at home to be with the Lord on June 25th, 2013. He was born in Thaxton, to the late Willard Anderson King and Virginia Wills King. The oldest of five siblings, Albert was preceded in death by Murrel B. King and Elizabeth King Frazier. Albert is survived by his wife Edith Lacy King, daughter Yvonne S. King and son Willard A. King, Jr. He is also survived by his brothers Bobbie King, James E. King and their families as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Albert was drafted into World War II while in high school. A lover of travel, after being honorable discharged from the Army, he traveled west to California to become a firefighter. He then reenlisted in the Army and fought in the Korean War. Albert served his country at Fort Knox, Kentucky, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, Fort Clayton, Panama Canal Zone and Fort Gordon, Georgia. He became an electronics technician, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant. In addition to his war medals, Albert received a citation from the Commanding General for outstanding service at the Signal School. Upon retirement, he continued to use his skills as an electronics technician as a civil servant to achieve 40 years of federal service. Albert also enjoyed using his AV and TV experience at Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. A former Future Farmer of America, he also loved tending his garden. He was also a member of the Panama Canal Scottish Rite Bodies. Albert was grateful for the opportunity provided by the Honor Air Guard to all World War II veterans to visit Washington, D. C. to see the new World War II Memorial. Albert's steadfast, patient, kind and generous nature as well as his sense of humor will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A funeral service was conducted from the graveside at Greenwood Cemetery on Saturday, June 29, 2013 at 2 pm. Arrangements are being handled by Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
