William Silas Rhodes passed away at Friendship Manor on Oct. 9, 2012. Born in Greenville, SC on Aug. 20, 1927, he was the son of the late George and Liddy Rhodes. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Margie. He leaves behind his two dogs, Buddy and Pepper; a special friend and neighbor, Shela Wolford. Bill was a veteran, having honorably served his country in the U.S. Army. He was an avid reader and self-taught man. He gained a multitude of knowledge over the years and had the unique ability to talk to anyone on any level. He was especially interested in the great philosophers and astrology. Bill enjoyed congregating at McDonalds, morning and evening; he always kept everyone entertained. He loved traveling the back roads to Vinton and would make that trip almost daily. Bill loved life and he lived it by these words of wisdom. “The moving finger writes, and having writ, moves on; not all you piety, nor all your wit can lure it back to cancel even half a line, nor all your tears wash away a word of it. What is done is done, one must move on.†In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to Disabled American Veterans (DAV) in Bill’s honor. Arrangements by Burch-Messier Funeral Home, Bedford, 540-586-7360.
