Willie Ray Willis, 77, of Bedford, died Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Big Stone Gap, on March 18, 1936 a son of the late Hiram Robert Willis and Lona Calton Willis. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Scott; two brothers, Robert and Fred Willis; and a daughter-in-law, Sabrina Willis. Ray was a member of Bedford Baptist Church serving as Sunday School Teacher, a Deacon and a U.S. Air Force veteran. Ray was a retired Electronics Technician with the FAA. Ray had 58 years service with the Boy Scouts; he was an Eagle Scout and the Scout Master of Troop 145 in Bedford. He loved golf, Canoeing, Gardening, volunteering for the Shepherds Table and Christmas in April. Ray was a kind and compassionate man with many words of wisdom. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Martha Lawson Willis, they started their life together when she was 13 and he was 16; four sons, Paul Wayne â€œTobyâ€ Willis and wife, Brenda; Michael Ray Willis and wife, Renay; Kevin Stuart Willis; Jason Eric Willis and wife, Kathryn; his grandchildren, Benjamin Willis and wife, Kirsty; Bradley Willis and wife, Marie; Savannah Willis and Hannah Willis; one great-granddaughter, Briley Willis; three brothers, Billy Willis and friend, Angie; Jimmy Willis and wife, Judy; Ronnie Willis. Memorials may be made to the Bedford Baptist Church, 1516 Oakwood Street, Bedford, Va 24523 or the Piedmont Area Boy Scout Council. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2013 at Bedford Baptist Church with Dr. David L. Henderson officiating. Burial will follow in Virginia Memorial Park.
