Right Worshipful Winford Norris Simmons passed to be with our Lord and Savior on Dec. 24, 2013. Right Worshipful Simmons was a 51 year member of Liberty Lodge #95 A.F.&A.M. of the Grand Lodge of Virginia. He served as Worshipful Master of Liberty Lodge #95 in 1970 and as District Deputy Grand Master in 1978. He was also a member of Bedford Royal Arch Chapter #60, in Bedford, VA. Winford “Wink” Simmons was born Sept. 17, 1930, in Roanoke to Moncie and Clara Simmons. He grew up in Roanoke where he met the love of his life, Barbara Ann Cooper, daughter of Willie and Kathryn Cooper, his wife of 60 years. He served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean Conflict where he was awarded two purple hearts from injuries sustained while successfully leading his platoon in the Chosin Reservoir Battle. He is a member of the American Legion Post No. 54. Wink retired from the Bedford County Sheriff’s Office after 33 years of service. He was kind to everyone and touched many lives in a positive way. Winford was a member of Pecks Baptist Church in Bedford, where he served as an usher and Trustee for many years. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; his son, Michael; his son-in-law, David Witt; and his sister and brother-in-law, Claude and Alain Akers. Surviving is his wife, Barbara Ann; daughter, Carolyn Witt; daughter and son-in-law, Mark and Cheryl Martin; grandchildren, Megan Bright, Casey and Josh Dollahan and Caleb Martin, He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Doris Simmons (Roanoke), Elmer Simmons (Roanoke); brother-in-law, Cyrus Cooper (Ohio); brother-n-law and sister-in-law, David and Wanda Cooper (Bedford); sister-in-law, Joyce Cooper (West Virginia); and sister-in-law, Sue Cooper (Blue Ridge). Masonic rites were held 2 P.M. Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013 at Oakey’s Vinton Chapel by Liberty Lodge No. 95 A.F. & A.M. funeral services followed with Pastor Bryan Sheehan officiating. Burial followed with military honors at the Martin Memorial Cemetery in Clearbrook. Online condolences can be made at www.oakeys.com.­
