Jean Sutherland Leftwich, 72, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 at Centra Lynchburg General Hospital after a long battle with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. Her loving family was at her side. Jean was born at Martha Jefferson Hospital in Charlottesville, on March 15, 1940. She was the only child of the late R. Goodloe Sutherland and Virginia Garth Sutherland. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, E. D. "Buddy" Leftwich of Lynchburg; her son Glenn D. Leftwich of Keene, NH; her daughter Brenda Leftwich Thornton of Hardy; her son-in-law Barry Thornton; two grandchildren Craig and Lera Thornton; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jean graduated from the new Amherst High School in 1957 and Phillips Business College. She retired from General Electric/Ericsson after 37 years of service. After retirement, Jean and her husband traveled extensively, enjoying their retirement together. They enjoyed going to auctions, NASCAR, and casinos. She was an excellent seamstress who also enjoyed all kinds of crafting. She also loved gardening and being outdoors. She was a loving mother and wife. She would do anything for anyone. A Celebration of Jean’s Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday Jan. 2, 2013 in the chapel of Tharp Funeral Home with the Rev. Barry Tucker officiating. Interment will follow in Spring Hill Cemetery. The family would like to thank the Centra staff at Lynchburg General Hospital, Guggenheimer Health and Rehabilitation Center, and Dr. Dwight S. Oldham and his staff at Alan B. Pearson Regional Cancer Center for their loving care.
