George Edward Updike, Sr., 88, of Huddleston, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013, at Bedford County Nursing Home. He was born on Thursday, March 13, 1924, in Bedford County, a son of the late Edison and Mary Witt Updike. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Marian Phyllis Robins Updike, brothers Odell and Thomas Updike, and sisters Myrtle Updike Zimmerman and Cecil Updike Croft. He was a retired Supervisor of the Lane Company of Altavista and a member of Bethesda United Methodist Church. He was a World War II veteran, where he served in the Army as a medic in the Phillipines. Surviving are his daughters, Patricia Updike Gray and husband John, Judy Updike Bates and husband David, son George E. Updike, Jr., and wife Rebecca; three granddaughters, Tabatha G. Atkinson (Raymond), Sharon B. Krantz (Brian), Angela U. Pinder (David); three grandsons, Michael W. Gray, David A. Bates, Jr., James Matthew Updike (Tammy); and great-grandchildren, Leeann and Dustin Atkinson, David Bates, III and Jared Bates, and Devin Krantz; brother Marvin P. Updike, sisters Cora U. Schwamm, Eula U. Morgan, and Mary Anna U. Krantz. Funeral services were held Sunday, March 10, 2013, at Updike's Funeral Chapel, Huddleston, at 2 p.m. with Rev. Sue Keen and Rev. Wayne Murphy officiating. Interment followed in the Bethesda United Methodist Church cemetery.
