Svarcas, Dr. Paul  
Dr. Paul Svarcas Dr. Paul "Doc" Svarcas born Oct. 11, 1923, in Ramoniskiai, Lithuania died Sunday, June 21, 2015, in Encinitas, Calif. Paul attended school in Lithuania and Germany, where he earned a doctorate in veterinary medicine. He immigrated to the United States and moved to Mascoutah, Ill. Paul established a veterinary practice, "Mascoutah Animal Hospital," and retired after 39 years. After moving to California with his wife, Aldona, in 1988, he enjoyed spending time with his family, continued his work for the self-determination of Lithuania, traveled internationally, achieved Silver Life Master rank in contract bridge and watched countless ball games. Paul was an active leader and member of many professional and service organizations, Lion's Club, First Federal Savings and Loan Board of Directors, Mascoutah Public Library Board of Directors, St. Martin of Tours Lutheran Church, and various Lithuanian National and Protestant associations. Paul leaves in loving memory his wife of 59 years, Aldona Erika, nee Sernas, Svarcas; and his daughters, Kristine (Bill) Sheffler, Rita Irene, Milda (Dan) Scott and Audrey (Vytenis) Veitas. "Opa" was devoted to his four grandchildren, Emily and Claudia Scott, Rokas and Kaz Veitas. LuAnn Beck LuAnn M. Beck, nee Mees, 61, of Columbia, Ill., born January 24, 1954, in Belleville, Ill., passed away Monday, June 29, 2015. LuAnn was a devoted officer at Columbia National Bank for 32 years, where she had a beloved dedication to her customers. Her passion for helping others through sound financial advise touched hundreds of Monroe County residents. Outside of her professional career, she loved nothing more than spending time with family and friends; dancing and laughing. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Violet E., nee Schlemmer, Mees. Surviving are her husband, Frank Thomas "Tom" Beck, whom she married on Sept. 8, 1990, in Columbia, Ill.; her children, Rhonda (Chris) Shaw of Columbia, Ill., Amy (Nathan) Strong of Waterloo, Ill., Stephanie (Steve) Pulse-Reichert of Columbia, Ill., Eric (Sarah) Beck of Boston, Mass., and Jason (Lindsay) Pulse of Columbia, Ill.; eight grandchildren; her siblings, Donald L. (Mary Lou) Mees of St. Louis, Mo., Sylvia (Robert A. Sr.) Eschmann of Columbia, Ill., Kenneth P. (Mary) Mees of Columbia, Ill., Mary (Terry) Herbeck of Columbia, Ill., Robert (Patricia) Mees of Columbia, Ill., and Sue (Phillip) Pickering of Dupo, Ill.; her brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; along with other relatives and friends. Zachary Epplin Zachary D. Epplin, 19, of Waterloo, Ill., born Feb. 25, 1996, in Belleville, Ill., passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2015, at home with his family at his side. Zac loved being the big brother of the family and always had a bit of advice or a good practical joke ready for us. He loved his pets very much and had hoped to one day become a veterinarian. He was very proud to have been teammates with his high school soccer team. Zac liked to fish and hunt and grill up a good meal to share with us. He put his family and friends above himself and we were all blessed to have known him even if it was only for a short time. Surviving are his parents, Doug and Beverly, nee Meyer, Epplin; his brothers, Lucas, Matthew, and Andrew Epplin; special friend, Kassy Clark of Smithton, Ill.; maternal grandparents, Kenny and Betty, nee Andres, Meyer of Columbia, Ill.; paternal grandparents, Robert and Janet, nee Langa, Epplin of Pinckneyville, Ill.; aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and many friends. Gage, Robert - Granite City  
Robert Gage Robert J. Gage, 87, of Granite City, Ill., formerly of Buncombe, Ill., born Oct. 22, 1927, in Greenbush Township, Warren County, Ill., passed away Tuesday, June 30, 2015, in St. Louis, Mo. Robert enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944 during World War II and re-enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950 during the Korean War. After his first tour of service, he attended Bradley University in Peoria, Ill. On August 23, 1952, Robert married Alma Lee Sumpter in Granite City, Ill., the daughter of Alonzo and Elsie, nee Atchison, Sumpter. Alma preceded Robert in death in 1984. Robert had worked for Granite City Steel, American Steel and Union Electric. He retired from the American Telephone and Telegraph, long lines department after 37 and a half years in an enjoyable occupation, having worked in St. Louis, Mo., and Collinsville, Ill. He was a faithful member of Third Baptist Church, Granite City, Ill. Robert will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma; his parents, Alvin R. Gage and Selma Fern, nee Benjamin, Gage; three brothers, Edwin, John "Benny" and Lloyd; and his three sisters, Katherine, Lois and Roberta. Surviving are his four nieces, Patsy A. Hilligoss of Granite City, Ill., Wilma F. Franz of Vernon Hills, Ill., Paula J. Cohrs of Muskego, Wis., and Cathy M. Krull of Elgin, Ill.; five nephews, J.B. Gage and Robert W. Gage both of Smithfield, Va., Jerry D. Gage of Garland, Texas, James Peterson of Murphysboro, Ill., and James Metcalf Jr. of Missouri; dear friend, Shirley Spurgeon of Alton, Ill.; and extended family and many friends. Memorial donations may be given to Third Baptist Church or American Heart Association and will be accepted at the funeral chapel.
