Bob Flake Robert E. "Bob" Flake, 86, of Swansea, Ill., born June 18, 1929, in East St. Louis, Ill., passed away on Thursday, Jan. 28, 2016, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville, Ill. Bob graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1948. He played baseball in the Muny Baseball League in East St. Louis. He played softball as well as cork ball at Southside in Belleville. Mr. Flake was employed by the Illinois Central Railroad until he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951 to 1953 and served as a military policeman. After his military service, he was employed by the B&O Railroad as a machinist and then was employed by the U.S. Army Troop Support Command in St. Louis, Mo., until he retired in 1988 after 27 years of service. Bob was a member of St. Augustine of Canterbury Parish, Belleville, Ill., Belleville-Swansea Moose Lodge 1221, American Legion Swansea Post 2007, the PSOP Men's Athletic Club, and a lifetime member of the Swansea Improvement Association since 1974. He loved the St. Louis Cardinals and could name their player rosters dating back to their championship years of 1942 to 1946. He was preceded in death by a son, James P. Flake; his parents, Louis and Rachel, nee Simpson, Flake; three brothers, Roland, Louis, and Joseph Flake; a sister, Dolores Howard; two brothers-in-law, Daniel Elrod and John Howard; three sisters-in-law, Eileen, Doris, and JoAnn Flake; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Flake; and a dear longtime friend, Doris Silvey. Special thanks to grandson Patrick Flake and nephew Eric Flake for all the personal assistance they rendered over the years. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
