Dorothy Kathryn Schwartz died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Toni Schwartz, in Loveland, Colo., while under hospice care for heart failure.
Dorothy was born Jan. 9, 1918, at a farm in rural Highland, Ill., (St. Morgan) and attended a country grade school that required a substantial daily walk to attend classes. Her classmates at the Faires Grade School became life long friends whom she stayed in touch with throughout her life. Following grade school she was needed on the farm to help her mother which ended her formal education, however she continued her learning independently with extensive reading.
On July 12, 1938 she married Clyde Schwartz and then resided at 208 E. Dee St., Lebanon, Ill., for 68 years. Recently, she moved to Trenton Village, Trenton, Ill., and finally to Sugar Valley Estates, Loveland, Colo., to be closer to family.
Dorothy was a dedicated housewife and family pillar. She thoroughly enjoyed staying up to date on the progress of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their academic pursuits, sports, and later their careers. Some of the grandkids favorite memories are the summer vacations spent in Lebanon and being pampered with "made to order" meals and quantities of "Sugar Cookies" by their grandmother. Dorothy also performed considerable volunteer work with the VFW
and Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department auxiliaries.
She faced her last days with a matter of fact attitude that characterized her life. She assured those around her that passing on was part of life and to not get upset with an event that will happen to all of us. She felt that living 95 years in relatively good health was all that one should expect. And living an independent and respectful life was an added blessing.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Clyde Schwartz, on Nov. 25, 1988; her parents, Henry Schneider and Katie (Haas) Schneider; her sisters, Lucille Reimann, and Emma Widicus; a brother, Arthur Schneider; and a granddaughter, Wendy (Schwartz) Boden who died on May 10, 2007.
Dorothy is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Brad and Toni Schwartz; three grandchildren and spouses, Alison (Schwartz) Medbery (James) of Loveland, Colo., Michael Schwartz (Alice) of Longmont, Colo., and Mark Schwartz (Allison) of Fort Bragg, N.C.; 11 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.
