James H. Alberternst, 76, of Highland, Ill., born May 18, 1937, in Breese, Ill., died at 12:25 a.m. Thursday, June 20, 2013, at St. Joseph Hospital, Breese, Ill.
James grew up on a farm near St. Rose. He worked for Kinne's Tom Boy in Highland. He served with the U.S. Army in Korea with Quartermaster Corps. He returned to Highland and worked at Gutzler's Tom Boy, then at Carlisle Syntec in Greenville, retiring in 1999. He was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Highland, Ill., and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union 881. James enjoyed bowling several leagues in the same week at High Top and Grantfork Bowl. He was an avid Cardinal Baseball fan and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William J. and Mathilda A., nee Korte, Alberternst Sr.;sisters, Nora F. "Pat" Lang who died April 14, 2011, Mary E. Loeh who died Oct. 14, 2010, Esther T. Seitz who died June 15, 1992, and Dorothy "Dottie" Stone who died Sept. 18, 1979; brothers, William A. Alberternst Jr. who died Aug. 6, 2011, and Daniel J. Alberternst who died April 17, 2001; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mary A. Mersinger who died Oct. 26, 1989, Lucy E. Staley who died Dec. 2, 1982, Conrad Stone who died Jan. 25, 2013, Francis "Frank" Seitz who died Jan 13, 1984, Wayne W. "Jake" Gutzler who died May 19, 2001, and Vernon Noll.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia T., nee Kirstein, Alberternst, whom he married on June 5, 1965, in Highland, Ill.; a daughter, Aimee T. (Ryan) Cole of Highland, Ill.; grandchildren, Anthony Jacob "AJ" Alberternst of Highland, Ill., and Ayla Elizabeth Cole of Highland, Ill.; sisters, Loretta J. Noll of Edwardsville, Ill., Josephine E. "Joey" Gutzler of Highland, Ill., and Eva E. (Lawrence) Oder of Mason, Ill.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Robert Lang of New Haven, Mo., Anna Alberternst of St. Rose, Ill., Alan L. Loeh of Highland, Ill., Tom Mersinger of Chamblee, Ga., Gerald L. (Linda) Staley of Belleville, Ill., John L. (Bev) Kirstein of North Hills, Calif., Betty J. (Paul) Ahne of Edwardsville, Ill., Carol A. Beichel of Highland, Ill., and James K. (Wanda) Kirstein of Senoira, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.
