Lawrence B. "Red" Cates, 82, of Maryville, Ill., born Jan. 20, 1932, in Hardin, Ill., passed away at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, March 3, 2014, at Eden Village in Glen Carbon, Ill.

Mr. Cates retired in 1994 from Granite City Steel after many years of dedicated service as a laborer. The United States Army veteran proudly served his country during the Korean War. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jasper Cates and Anna Mae, nee Roach, Casey. a brother, Isaiah Cates; and two sisters, Imogene Davis and Vergene Cates.

Surviving are his beloved and cherished wife, Imogene, nee Bishop, Cates, whom he married on June 12, 1954, in Troy, Ill.; a daughter, Carol Wolfe of Edwardsville, Ill.; a son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Patricia Cates of Troy, Ill.; two granddaughters, Sara and Tim Bennett and Heather Cates; a grandson, Aaron and Celia Cates; five great-grandchildren, Kayla, Brendan, Emily, Nora and Cason; other extended family and friends.

Memorials may be made to the Glen-Ed Pantry or to Holiday Shores Fire Department and may be accepted at the funeral home.

Visitation: In celebration of his life, friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, march 9, 2014, at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Road in Glen Carbon, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 10, 2014, at the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Anderson officiating. Burial with military honors will be at the Quercus Grove Cemetery in Edwardsville, Ill.
