Sgt. Maj. Mabel A. R. Otten, 88, born May 14, 1924, in Centreville Township, died Thursday, April 11, 2013, in her home.
Sgt. Maj. Otten enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps May 16, 1944. She served during World War II
and was discharged following demobilization of the Women's Reserve in 1946. She re-enlisted in the reserve in 1947, returned to active duty in 1948 and subsequently integrated into the Regular Marine Corps where she eventually became the 4th Sergeant Major of Women Marines on Aug. 1, 1969. In 1972 she transferred to Fleet Reserves and retired after 30 years of service on 1 Feb 1975.
Sgt. Maj. Otten enjoyed traveling, dancing, gardening, spending time with her family and friends, and entertaining them with stories about her life and experiences.
She was preceded in death by her parents George and Emma, nee Peterson, Otten; three brothers, Edgar, Harold, and Harvey Otten; four sisters, Alma Otten, Adelia Mees, Elenora Newton, and Ottilda Kossina; and four nieces and two nephews, Irene Baltz, Mary Divers, Roy Mees, Doris Millhouse, Arthur Dean Newton, and Shirley Todd.
Surviving are her sister, Pearl Brinley; her beloved friend, Raymond Kempf; seven nieces and a nephew, Charlene Jacobs, Cheryl Hicks, Geraldine Schaefer, Gwenda Capper, Nancy Ferguson, Norman Dale Newton, Sandra Herling, and Sharon Burnes; and numerous great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews.

Visitation: Friends may call from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the Strauss-Leesman Funeral Home in Millstadt, Ill.
Funeral: A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the funeral home with Rev. Jean Carmean, her great-niece, Traci Cihon and her great-nephew, Joseph Cihon officiating. A dinner and reception will be held immediately following the service at the Millstadt VFW
