Robert Mehrtens

Robert O. Mehrtens of Smithton, Ill., formerly of Millstadt, Ill., born Jan. 6, 1937, in North Dupo, Ill., passed away Monday, Dec. 2, 2013, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.

Robert had worked for Brinks Securities as a truck driver, for Peabody Coal and for Millstadt Township. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Millstadt, Ill., the Millstadt Union Fire Department since 1969, where he had achieved the ranks of Captain, City Chief, Assistant Chief and Fire Chief. He was also a member of the Millstadt Sportsman's Club.

Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Lou Mehrtens, nee Jurcick and his parents, Otto and Helen, nee Brookshire, Mehrtens.

Surviving are his wife, Shelby, nee Sprehe, Mehrtens; his brother, Ray Mehrtens; his sisters, Frances Mann and Beverly Steinquest; his step-children, Bradley Michael and Tina Michael; his sister-in-law, Maxine (Jim) Edwards. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Memorials may be made to the Millstadt Union Fire Department or to the Millstadt Sportsman's Club.


Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, at Strauss-Leesman Funeral Home in Millstadt, Ill.,

Friends may also call from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Millstadt, Ill.

There will be a fire department service at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Funeral: Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013, at the church with the Rev. Michael Kumm officiating. Burial will be in Mount Evergreen Cemetery in Millstadt, Ill.
