Shirley P. Shive, nee Parsons, 93, of Belleville, Ill., born Tuesday, May 18, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minn., died Monday, Sept. 23, 2013, at Rosewood Care Center in Swansea, Ill.
Mrs. Shive was a graduate of University of Illinois
where she was a member of the U of I Alumni Association and Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority. Shirley was a teacher in the Chicago area, a counselor for Girl Scouts and Campfire Girls in Minnesota during her summer vacations and a Brownie Scout Leader in the Signal Hill School District. She was a life long Presbyterian and a member of First United Presbyterian Church in Belleville, Ill., where she served as an Elder and a Sunday school teacher. She was also a member of the St. Clair County Historical Society. Shirley was a volunteer swimming instructor at the Belleville YMCA for third grade students. Swimming was her favorite activity. She enjoyed tent camping with her husband and traveling to every state in the continental U.S. and some of the lower Canadian provinces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Mable "Mae", nee Finch, Parsons; and her sister, Phyllis Shive.
Surviving are her husband, Charles R. Shive of Belleville, Ill.; nieces, Nancy Shive of Austin, Texas, and Hilary (Jim) Garner of Aspen, Colo.; nephews, Scott Shive of Tampa, Fla., Bradford (Leslie) Shive of Dekalb, Ill., Ralph (Linda) Shive of South Bend, Ind., Howard (Norma) Shive of Waterloo, Ill., James (Jill) Shive of Ashburn, Va., Frank (Michelle) Helm of Piedmont, Calif., and Murray Helm, Jr. of LaJolla, Calif.; sister-in-law, Shirley Shive-Helm of Visalia, Calif.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at Kurrus Funeral Home in Belleville, Ill., and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at First United Presbyterian Church in Belleville, Ill.
Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at First United Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Rob Dyer officiating. Interment will follow at Walnut Hill Cemetery, Belleville, Ill.
