Walter C. Milton, 79, of Staunton, Ill., formerly of Granite City, Ill., born June 23, 1933, in Stewart County, Tenn., died Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at Christian Hospital Northeast, St. Louis, County, Mo.
Mr. Milton received his early education in Stewart County, Tenn., and was in the first graduating class of Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. He retired as vice-president/general manager of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. in Alton, Ill. He served as chairman of the Granite City Housing Authority and retired after 24 years of service as a member of the board of directors. Mr. Milton served for 12 years as legislative aide to Senator Sam Vadalabene of District 56 and was active on the Great River Road's Committee's Recreation local I.L.D.O.T. Planning Commission. He was a former member of the board of directors and retired as chairman of the board of Guardian Savings Bank. He was also a former member of, Belleville Area College G.C. Campus, Advisory Board of Granite City School District, Granite City Park District Board, Democratic Precinct Committeeman, G.C. 22, Granite City Board of Alderman, Ward 6, Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce for 30 years and chairman of their Law Enforcement Committee, former member and a former president (1975-76) of the Rotary Club
of Granite City, and a Paul Harris Fellow, member of the Illinois Bottlers Assn., Cahokia Mounds Council. He co-sponsored the formation of the D.A.R.E Program for the Granite City School District 9. Mr. Milton received the citizen of the year award from the Granite City Park District in 1975 and 1998, the Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award and Belleville Area College 15 Great Men Award.
Mr. Milton was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy, nee Hawk, Milton who died in 2009; his parents, Herbert and Maggie, nee Clinard, Milton; daughter, Patricia A. Milton; grandson, Walter Milton, III; great-grandson, Aaron Hergert; brothers, James, Herbert, Jr., and Charles K. Milton; and sisters, Sallie Kirksey, Marcia Pigg and Lucille Ferguson.
Surviving are his sons, Walter C. Milton, Jr. of Staunton, Ill., and Brett (Julie) Milton of Edwardsville, Ill.; daughters, Mary (Craig) Rydgig of Granite City, Ill., and Anita (Dwayne) Winchell of Pleasant Hill, Ill.; grandchildren, Thomasina Hergert, Kyle and Cody Milton, Michelle, Clayton and Christopher Rydgig, Jason and Adam Winchell, Crystal Clark, and Brittany, Jacob and Caden Milton; great-grandchildren, Conner, Devin and Logan Hergert, Aubrie and Drew Clark, and Layla and Carter Rydgig; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorials may be made to Southern Illinois Hospice and accepted at the funeral home.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013, at Davis Funeral Home. Interment will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Glen Carbon, Ill.
