William Harris

William D. "Bill" Harris, 73, of Holiday Shores, Ill., and formerly of Granite City, Ill., born Nov. 25, 1939, in Granite City, Ill., passed away at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at his home.

Mr. Harris served the community with the Granite City Police Department from 1964 and served as the Chief of Police from 1985 until his retirement in August 1987. He was a lifetime member of the Madison County Police Association and the Southern Illinois Police Chief Association. He was a faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Granite City, Ill., and was a member of the Granite City Masonic Lodge No. 835 and was a Shriner. He was an avid traveler devoted husband, father and grandfather and enjoyed his days of fishing and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.

Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Dana and Tom Ponder of Troy, Ill.; son, William D. "Dan" Harris Jr., and his friend, Geysha Anon of Miami, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Jake Harris, Zach Ponder, Danielle Harris Colby, Kate Ponder, Matt Ponder, Christopher Harris, Jessica Harris, Alexis Harris and Megan Harris; three sisters and one brother-in-law, June Meredith of Gulf Breeze, Fla., Dona Boyer of Granite City, Ill., and Carol and Gerry Davis of Crosby, Texas; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Larry and Marcia Cook of Lenexa, Kan.; many nieces; nephews; other extended family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his cherished wife of 52 years, Marilyn, nee Cook, "Joyce" Harris, whom he married on Dec. 3, 1960, at the Aldersgate United Methodist Church in East St. Louis, Ill., and who died on Dec. 2, 2012; parents, William Garrett and Helen Louise, nee Adams, Harris; two sisters, Marilyn Hasty and Rita "Joyce" Stevenson.

Memorials may be made to the family and may be accepted at the funeral home.

Visitation: Friends may call, in celebration of his life, from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2013, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, Ill.

Funeral: Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 2, 2013, at the funeral home with the Rev. Lisa Guilliams officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, Ill.

Bill has enriched our lives at Lewis Yard Primary school and the Lewis Yard Community on the whole, on Grand Bahama Island. We are saddened by his passing. He will be remembered for his kindness and his big heart. We will remember you his family in our prayers at our school assembly. May his soul rest in peace.
