Mom and I in O Fallon, March 2011

Mom was a great lady and a good friend. She worked as a reading tutor at Town Line Elementary School in Town Line NY in the late 1960s. After the family moved to Illinois, she worked as a reading tutor and a playground monitor at William Holiday Elementary School. She played an important role in establishing the Fairview Heights Library and made many donations of the years, and spent no small amount of time helping children learn to read during the 1980s. She was an important contributor to the Arts, and was active in supporting the Belleville Philharmonic and later the St. Louis Symphony. She was one of the parents that helped establish the band program at Pontiac Junior High as an after school program, and was instrumental in taking the program from an after-school program to part of the school curriculum. She was one of those quiet movers and shakers in the community, instigating cultivating the ground for all sort of cultural activity from senior trips to walking trails. When mom walked into the township hall or city hall, they knew she was a tenacious force that sought solutions and results to improve the quality of life for not just herself, but for local residents.

Mom was a great cook, but there was so much more to Mom than her cooking. She was a great friend and confidant, and I will sorely miss her.

I will miss Millie so much. We spent a lot of time together after becoming acquainted during our "mall walks". Saturdays had become "our day" and we always managed to find something of interest that we both enjoyed. Seems to me that one of her greatest joys in life was telling ,me about her "girls" and their families. She really loved all of them and her grandchildren. Was also very interested in the welfare of all who were regulars at the mall. All of her family have my deepest sympathy..she can never be replaced but I will retain many memories.

I am so sorry about the loss of your mother. I knew her as a Mall Walker. She was such a lovely and friendly woman. Years ago, my mother also walked with me. Your mother would always sit down and visit with my mom on a bench, while I walked. My mother is now in a home with Alzheimer's. Your mother would still inquired about her when I saw her at the Mall. She was a special lady who will be missed a lot.
