Amiel Stephen Cueto, 63, born Feb. 22, 1949, in East St. Louis Ill., died in the peace of Christ on Memorial Day Monday May 28, 2012.

Ame was loved by many and spent his final days surrounded by his adoring family and friends. Ame grew up on 40th and Waverly in East St. Louis in Holy Angels parish and always said it was the closest place to heaven he had ever been.

After graduating from East St. Louis Senior High School in 1967, he served as a military policeman in the United States Army. He was an officer for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department in the 9th district from 1970 to 1976. He earned a bachelor of arts in administration of justice from University of Missouri St. Louis, a master of arts in urban affairs from St. Louis University and a juris doctorate in 1980 from St. Louis University School of Law.

He was a member of the DuBourg Society of St. Louis University.

Ame was preceded in death by his father and mother, Eloy and Louise, nee Peterson, Cueto; his aunt, Marie Thornton; his uncle, Julius "Hank" Cueto; and his lifelong friend Don Llamas.

Surviving are his wife of 40 years, Elaine, nee Rogers, Cueto; his daughter, Kara (Roger) Osthoff; his son, Gregory (Chasity) Cueto; and his grandchildren, David and Cecilia Osthoff, and Paul, Lilian, and Rose Cueto. Also surviving are his loving brothers, Lloyd (Patricia) Cueto, Christopher (Rebecca) Cueto, David "Dude" Cueto; and his remarkable sister, Maria "Rere" Hartlein; an aunt, Ines, nee Cueto, Bratton; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, in laws and friends.

Memorials may be made to Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic School or Althoff Catholic High School. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.kasslyfuneral.com.

Visitation: Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Belleville, Ill.

Funeral: Mass will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Belleville, Ill.
