Anita Kendall Eftimoff, PhD., 89, born May 3, 1927, in Granite City, Ill., to David H. and Ollie G. Kendall, passed Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, in Reno, Nev.
She completed elementary through high school in Granite City prior to attending Washington University in St. Louis where she earned her bachelor's degree. Her primary vocation was teaching. Following a Master's degree, a doctorate from Purdue University in gifted education was attained.
During her years as a teacher, she taught multi-levels in classroom surroundings, but her joy was her work with the gifted children. Beyond education, music was a passion. She supported the arts from an early age, playing for the Presbyterian Church in Granite City to her volunteer efforts with the St. Louis Symphony. Volunteerism was in her life plan. Membership and activities included the St. Louis Junior League, Edgewood Children's Center in St. Louis, various animal shelters, and multiple performing agencies in the St. Louis metropolitan area. In 1983, she was a chaperone for the Miss Universe Pageant in St. Louis. After a move to the Northern Nevada area in 2003, she was a volunteer at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City.
Teaching junior high in Granite City provided a chance to work with Vasil Eftimoff, a young teacher involved in local politics in Illinois. They wed in 1959 and raised a son, James. He and his wife Ellen Louise, married in 1998. James Thaddeus (J T) and Amy Kendall Eftimoff were her grandchildren. Anita shared a residence in Washoe Valley, Nevada, for over 10 years, with her son and his family.
Her entire life included a variety of canine companions. She wrote, played music and even ran for public office. The Granite City native educated many and provided support to growth for all. Much like her husband Vasil, Anita's life was given to the development of children, as that is our future.
In addition to her parents, Anita was preceded in death by her brother David.
She is survived by her son and his family, along with multiple nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Humane Society for the care of animals.
