Arnold J. Schroeder, 96, of Highland, Ill, born Thursday, Aug. 14, 1919, in Bartelso, Ill., died Sunday, March 13, 2016, at Countryside Manor, Aviston, Ill.
He was a member of Saint Paul Catholic Church, Highland, Ill.; American Legion Post 321 in New Baden, Ill.; and a former member of St. George Catholic Chruch, New Baden, Ill.
Arnold was born in Bartelso, Ill. He grew up there, and worked on the family farm. He served with the U.S. Army, during WWII, from June 8, 1942 to January 13, 1946, as a Machine Gunner in the Philippines and Asiatic Pacific Theater. He received two Bronze Stars. After the service he return to the Metro East and worked as a painter at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. He later retired in the 1980's. He and his wife moved to Denver, Colorado in the late 1990's. After his wife died he returned to Highland. He was a choir member at St. George Catholic Church, New Baden, Ill. He enjoyed yard work and was a gardener.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Henrietta J., nee Wilken, who preceded him on Oct. 25, 2002; his father, John Schroeder; his mother, Mary, nee Huene, Schroeder; brothers, Raymond L., Lawrence F., Louis H., Virgil H. Schroeder; brothers, Emil, John, Bart, and Richard G. Schroeder; and two sisters, Elizabeth Kannall, and Monica Schroeder.
Surviving are a step-daughter, Joan (Joe) Griesbaum-Guzzo of Moline, Ill.; niece and caregiver, Jill M. (Jeff) Schwend of Highland, Ill.; five step-grandchildren; numerous step great-grandchildren; and several step great-great-grandchildren.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul School Education Foundation.
Service: Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, 2016, at Resurrection Cemetery, New Baden, Ill., with Fr. Gene Neff, pastor, officiating.
Interment will follow at the cemetery.
