Arvin Wepking Obituary
Arvin F. Wepking, 86, of Collinsville, Ill., born March 16, 1923, in Waterloo, Wis., died Monday, July 27, 2009, at Anderson Hospital, Maryville, Ill.
During World War II, Arvin served as an aircraft inspector and C47 Crew Chief, achieving the rank of staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He served in the China, Burma Theatre with a group of aviators flying supplies from India over the Himalayan Mountains into Burma, China. This was the only way to re-supply our troops once the Japanese troops took control of the Burma Road.
After the war, Arvin became a member of the "Hump Pilots Association", a group of aviators that had flown over the Himalayan Mountains and survived their mission's many challenges.
While in training state side, Arvin met and married his wife, Hazel Marie, nee Taylor, Wepking on June 26, 1944. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. Arvin taught auto mechanics at the Man Power Training Center and later at East St. Louis High School, where he retired. He was always known as a man who took great pride in teaching. Arvin was a member of the Collinsville American Legion as well as the Collinsville VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Peter F. and Ruth, nee LaBounty, Wepking; and two sisters, Belva Krakow and Erma Johnson.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel, nee Taylor, Wepking of Collinsville, Ill.; two daughters, Gwendilyn (James) Staley of Collinsville, Ill., and JoEtta (Harold) Stief of Collinsville, Ill.; a son, Russell (Diane) Wepking of Collinsville, Ill.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a brother, Zenneith Wepking of Pardeeville, Wis.; a sister, Ilene Matson of Madison, Wis.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, July 30, 2009, at Herr Funeral Home, Collinsville, Ill.
Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, July 31, 2009, at Herr Funeral Home, Collinsville, Ill. Burial will be in Lake View Memorial Gardens, Fairview Heights, Ill.
