EDWARDSVILLE -- For the second time in eight years, an Edwardsville couple has lost a teenage son in a traffic crash Thursday that also killed a New Douglas man.|
Brian Blain, 19, of Edwardsville, died Thursday afternoon after his 1992 Mitsubishi struck the back wheels of a tractor-trailer truck on Illinois 17 south of Momence, Kankakee County authorities said Friday.
A backseat passenger, Nathaniel A. Gately, 27, of New Douglas, died when he was thrown from the car, Illinois State Police reported. Gately was thrown from the car on impact. State police reported to the county coroner.
The third passenger, Jerry D. Westmoreland, 26, of Glen Carbon, was taken to Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee, where he underwent surgery Thursday night. He condition was not available Friday.
Blain's brother Benjamin Blain died in October 1999 at age 18 near Champaign when a car in which he was a passenger crossed a highway center line and struck a van. Twin sisters Melissa and Erica Holliday, 18, of Edwardsville, also died in the crash.
The Blain brothers' parents are Robert Blain, retired professor of sociology at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and Mary Blain, an employee of the SIUE Early Childhood Center.
Funeral arrangements for Blain are pending at Weber and Rodney Funeral Home in Edwardsville.
