Britanie Holmes

Obituary Condolences

A 16-year-old Waterloo High School sophomore was killed Wednesday afternoon in a head-on collision on a rural Monroe County road.

Britanie Holmes, of Waterloo, was a front-seat passenger in a 1995 Ford Taurus driven by Breann Jones, 16, at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Jones' car was traveling east on HH Road near Moore Road when she lost control and slid sideways into a 1999 Ford Taurus driven by Eugene Redd, 82.

Holmes was pronounced dead about an hour after the accident.

Jones and two passengers, Cody Wetzler, 16, and Kiefer Rosier, 15, were taken to a Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis, said Monroe County Sheriff Dan Kelly.

The Wetzler and Rosier family asked the hospital not to release information related to their conditions, a hospital spokesman said on Friday. Jones was listed in satisfactory condition at St. Louis Children's Hospital, said hospital spokesman Heidi Suppelsa.

Redd initially refused medical treatment, but Kelly said he was later taken to a hospital with "serious injuries."

Illinois State Police accident reconstructionists continue to investigate the cause of the accident, Kelly said.
