Deanna D. Johnson

Obituary Condolences

A 4-year-old girl police found dead inside a Converse Avenue home Nov. 25 was laid to rest Wednesday morning as police continue their investigation.

A funeral for Deanna D. Johnson was held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at House of Prayer in Washington Park. The girl is survived by her mother, Twanna Lyles, of East St. Louis, her father, Dewitt Johnson, of Washington Park, and three brothers, Johnnie McElroy, Damacia Johnson and Deonta Johnson, all of East St. Louis.

Police Chief Michael Baxton said police are waiting on toxicology reports from an autopsy conducted Monday.

Police found the girl dead inside a bedroom of the home at 1726 Converse Ave. after responding to a 911 call from that location. They also found an unusually groggy 2-year-old and two older children inside the home with a woman and her male companion. Baxton has said all of the children are siblings.

Police will not release the names of the toddler, who was hospitalized but has since been released, or the adults, who were held for questioning for a couple of days. They were released from jail, pending further investigation, Baxton said, and no charges have been filed against them.
