Eldon Whetstine

Eldon D. Whetstine, 78, of Belleville, Ill., born Nov. 10, 1933, in Wellman, Iowa, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2012, at Memorial Hospital, Belleville, Ill.

Eldon was retired from the U.S. Air Force as a master sergeant in supply after 23 years of service. He served in the Korean and Vietnam War. He also retired after 15 years from McDonnell Douglas as a senior parts analyst. He enjoyed lapidary work and would often create new gems wherever he was stationed. He was an avid fisherman, camper, boater, and gardener. Eldon was especially known for his homegrown tomatoes and famous beef jerky. His favorite hobbies were listening to his extensive music library collection and watching movies.

Eldon was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Mitsu, nee Matsumoto, Whetstine; parents, Ivan and Irene, nee Whetstine, Whetstine; and infant brothers and sister.

Surviving are his loving wife of two years, Connie, nee Whetstine (Davison), Whetstine; loving children, Fred (Lisa) Whetstine of Byrnesmill, Mo., Byron (Gie) Whetstine of Sugarland, Texas, and Gerald Whetstine of Belleville, Ill.; stepchildren, November (Cindi McGee) Davison of Murphysboro, Ill., and Anthoney Davison of Murphysboro, Ill.; grandchildren, Murphy Roberts of Clayton, Mo., Elasha (Celestine) Butler of Sugarland, Texas, Caitlin Whetstine of Sugarland, Texas, Blake Whetstine of Belleville, Ill., and Haley Whetstine of Columbia, Ill.; great-grandchild, Adrian Butler; mother-in-law, Pearl Rutledge of Clinton, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Yoshiko Ito of Tokyo, Japan and Pamela White of Clinton Iowa; brother-in-law, Toshio Matsumoto; several nieces, nephews, and cousins; and the Class of 1952, although small, but was treated like brothers and sisters.

Visitation: Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at the Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, 3412 Frank Scott Parkway West, Belleville, Ill.



Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, 2012, at Valhalla Gaerdner Holten Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill., with Bishop Stan Hatch officiating. Interment will be held privately at a later date.
