Erby Wood

Erby U. Wood, 99, of Granite City, Ill., born March 17, 1917, in Frisbee, Mo., passed away on Friday, April 15, 2016, at Gateway Regional Medical Center, Granite City, Ill.

Erby was a faithful and dedicated member of Grace Baptist Church in Granite City, Ill. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 877 in Granite City, Ill., and Scottish Rite Bodies in Belleville, Ill. He had worked for Commonwealth in Granite City, Ill., and American Car in St. Louis, Mo., as a craneman, retiring after many years of dedicated service. After retirement Erby and Bobbie moved to Climax Springs, Mo., and built a home on the 54 mile marker at Lake of the Ozarks. He enjoyed fishing, water skiing, and bowling on the Senior League in Granite City, Ill. His greatest joy was serving the Lord, going to church and spending time with his family, whom he adored. Erby loved life, he loved to laugh, but most of all he loved his family. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by two wives, Addie "Bobbie" Wood and Mildred Wood; a son, Thomas Wood Sr.; parents, James Albert Wood and Bessie, nee Westbrook, Wood; stepmother, Gladys, nee Gravel, Wood; and his sibilings, Clarence Wood, Emory Wood, Amos Wood and Gladys Palme.

Surviving are his dear wife, George Ann, nee Thomason, Wood of Granite City, Ill., whom he married July 4, 2006; loving children, Dixie Wood of Madison, Ill., Barbara Rainwater of Granite City, Ill., and Polly (Bob) Shackelford of San Antonio, Texas. He was a proud grandfather to Randy (Susan) Rainwater of Granite City, Ill., Thomas (Tracy) Wood Jr. of Cedar Hill, Mo., Gwynne Adams of San Antonio, Texas, and Tammy Wood of Alton, Ill.; also surviving are nine great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, and extended family and friends.

Memorial donations may be given to or Grace Baptist Church and donations will be accepted at the funeral chapel. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.irwinchapel.com.

Visitation: Visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2016 at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, Ill., with a Masonic Service at 7 p.m.

Funeral: In celebration of his life, funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 18, 2016 at Irwin Chapel with Rev. Daniel Wilson officiating. Erby will be laid to rest next too his first wife, Addie "Bobbie" Wood at Valley View Cemetery, Edwardsville, Ill.
