Frances Marie Heien, nee Armstrong, 77, of O'Fallon, Ill., born May 7, 1939, in East St. Louis, Ill., passed away Thursday afternoon, Sept. 1, 2016, at Barnes Jewish Hospital, St. Louis, Mo.
Fran was one of three daughters of Frank and Gertrude, nee Drinkwine, Armstrong. She was baptized, confirmed and married in O'Fallon United Church of Christ. She was active in her church for many years and was a volunteer summer camp counselor for PTOEC - Exceptional Children.
A proud alumni of Alton Memorial Hospital School of Nursing, Fran worked a few years at Belleville, Ill., hospitals, then for 14 years as a registered nurse at O'Fallon School District 90. She was an American Red Cross volunteer, served on the board of directors for Memorial Hospital's Auxiliary, volunteering for 26 years, and the hospital foundation board.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary D. Heien Sr., whom she married June 24, 1961, at O'Fallon United Church of Christ, O'Fallon, Ill., and who passed away June 22, 2011; her son, Gary D. Heien Jr.; parents; and sisters, Shirley Armstrong and Virginia Joergensen.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan Lynn (Steve) Gasser of O'Fallon, Ill.; grandchildren, Jillian and Luke Gasser, and Trevor, Gavin, and Jordan Dumstorff-Heien; a brother-in-law, Pete Joergensen; a nephew, Kevin Armstrong, two special and loving nieces, Diahann Gagen and Nanette Ruwe; and her dear cousin, Gloria Schobert.
In keeping with Fran and Gary's generosity, memorial donations are suggested to Memorial Foundation. The guestbook may be signed at www.wfh-ofallon.com.
Services: Although Fran would have preferred to avoid the attention, it seems fitting and appropriate to host an open house reception, in lieu of a traditional funeral, to honor her. Friends are invited to join her family to celebrate her life between the hours of 1:30 and 4 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 2, 2016, at Memorial East Hospital, 1404 Cross St., Shiloh, Ill.
Private services will be held for the family. Interment will be at O'Fallon City Cemetery, O'Fallon, Ill.
