Fred R. Hensler, Sr., age 79, of O'Fallon, Ill. formerly of Washington Park, Ill., born Sept. 11, 1927, in East St. Louis, Ill., died on Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007 at his residence.
Fred was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran and a Korean War U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was a founding member, past Commander, post member and life member of VFW Post 6372, Washington Park, Ill. He later transferred his life membership to VFW Post 8677 in Fairview Heights, Ill. In the 1950's he was an amateur boxer in the U.S.
Navy and played minor league baseball for two years. Fred worked as a laborer and a boilermaker for 35 years and was a proud union card carrying member. He later worked as a dispatcher for the ESDA of St. Clair County, Ill. He was involved with politics all his life and a staunch Democrat. Fred served as a precinct committeeman of Canteen Township from the mid 1970's to 1980's.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 41 years, Gloria, nee Allee, Hensler; his parents, Edward and Florine, nee Sexton, Hensler; four brothers, Clinton, Joseph, Wilbur and Chester Hensler; two sisters, Marcella Hensler and Dorothy Able.
He is survived by his four children, Fred Hensler, Jr. of Fairview Heights, Ill., Moneta (James) Cox of O'Fallon, Ill., Marcella (Alan) Simpson of Belleville, Ill. and Debra (William) Parker of St. Louis, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Jason (Loni) Hensler of Pocahontas, Ill., Dannielle (Bobby) Hudson of Troy, Ill., Jennifer (Tim) Dockins of O'Fallon, Ill., Julie Derion of Caseyville, Ill., Jason (Kristen) Simpson of Belleville, Ill., Matt Simpson (Mandi Bowers) of Belleville, Ill., Ryan and Travis Wilson of Indiana; seven great-grandchildren, Von and Kylie Hudson, Taylor and Courtney Dockins, Cameron Derion, Autumn Cox and Kaylee Simpson; two sisters, Mary Lou Prsha of Fairmont City, Ill., and Hanna Williams of Granite City, Ill.
Memorials may be made to Illinois Center for Autism.
Visitation: Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at Kassly Mortuary, Fairview Heights, Ill.
Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, 2007, at Kassly Mortuary Chapel, Fairview Heights, Ill., with Msgr. Bernard Voss officiating. Interment will be in Valhalla Gardens of Memory, Belleville, Ill.
