George Wolfe

George Samuel Wolfe, 99, of Granite City, Ill., born July 13, 1916, in Webb City, Mo., passed away Monday, May 30, 2016, at Gateway Regional Medical Center, Granite City, Ill.

He was a carpenter by trade and worked in general contracting for nearly 80 years.

He retired in 1989 from M.H. Wolfe & Company in Granite City, Ill., and was proud to be a dedicated member of the Carpenter's Union for over

75 years. He was proud of his many construction jobs throughout the area. The United States Navy veteran proudly served his country with the Construction Battalion during World War II. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and enjoyed attending the annual reunions of the Construction Battalions. He was an avid bowler and received many trophies and awards through the years. He enjoyed all sports and enjoyed his years of playing ball and throwing darts. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Louise, nee Betts, Wolfe, whom he married on Sept. 14, 1940, in Granite City, Ill., and who died July 4, 2002; a daughter, Judith C. Berner; a great-grandson; his parents, Morris and Gertrude, nee Freeman, Wolfe; three brothers, Freeman, Robert and Glen Wolfe; and two sisters, Muriel Lindsay and Ruth Abbott.

Surviving are three daughters and sons-in-law, Georgia L. and Rev. Lee Jackson of Wood River, Ill., Sharon and Thomas

Mahoney Sr. of Vista, Calif., and Mary L. and Charles Thomas of Tampa, Fla.; a son and daughter-in-law, David S. and Janis Wolfe of Granite City, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack Wolfe of Norfolk, Va.; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family and friends.

Visitation: In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Friday, June 3, 2016, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite

City, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at noon Friday, June 3, 2016, at the funeral home, with Reverend Lee Jackson and Reverend Thomas Mahoney Sr. officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Estates, Glen Carbon, Ill.
