Helyn Potter

Helyn Potter, nee Azari, 97, of Granite City, Ill., passed away at 10:26 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2016, in the Vintage Gardens, Meridian Village, Glen Carbon, Ill.

She was born January 28, 1919, in Sabraton, W.Va., a daughter of the late Joseph and Barbara, nee Juricska, Azari. The family moved to Granite City, Ill., in 1930 to 1931. She was a devoted member of St. John Lutheran Church in Granite City for over 50 years; served as a Sunday school teacher; was active with the choir; made banners for the altar; and was a camp counselor at Camp Piasa for area Lutheran youth. At an early age, she began writing articles and drawing illustrations for a local religious journal. She was a talented artist and enjoyed painting landscapes and still life in oil, acrylic and watercolors. She had a love of ballet and enjoyed dancing in her youth. She also served her country during World War II as a "Rosie the Riveter" working for Curtis Wright Aircraft Company. She loved nature and enjoyed caring for birds and flowers. She will be remembered for the love and special times shared with her family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Oliver T. Potter; three brothers, Nick, John and Joseph Azari; a sister, Mary Hoover; a stepson, Daniel Potter; and three sisters-in-law, Vivian, Pat and Ruth Azari.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gene and Carol Potter of O'Fallon, Mo.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Heather and James Reed of St. Louis, Mo., and Terry and Michael Reynolds of Carson City, Nev.; stepson, Thomas Potter of Arnold, Mo; her grandchildren and spouses, Rachelle Potter, Timothy and Winnie Reynolds, April, nee Reynolds, and Veasna Keo, Elliott and Elizabeth Reed and Aubrey Reed; a great-grandchild, Olive Keo; other extended family and friends.

Visitation: In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, February 11, 2016, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road, Granite City, Ill.

Funeral: Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, February 11, 2016, at the chapel, with Reverend David Corson and Vicar Bill Hale officiating. Burial will be at Friedens Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
