Howard Lee Emery, 77, of Freeburg, Ill., formerly of Yucaipa, Calif., born July 8, 1938, in Herrin, Ill., died Sunday, April 3, 2016, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, Ill.

Mr. Emery was a retired captain for the Redlands Fire Department in California. He was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ in Freeburg, Ill., and was a former governor for the Loyal Order of the Moose. Howard had been a member of the U.S. Army Reserves.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lorraine, nee Brown, Emery; a son, James Lee Emery; his parents, William Howard and Moureen Lucille, nee Gregory, Emery; and a sister, Judith Gregory.

Surviving are his wife of four and a half years, Peggy L., nee Wilderman, Kessler-Emery, whom he married on Oct. 8, 2011; three sons, Howard Lee Jr. (Holly) Emery of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, Wayne Lee (Sandra Dee) Emery of Riverside, Calif., and Robert Lee (Teresa) Emery of Buckley, Wash.; three stepdaughters, Sondra Kessler (Luke) Niederhauser of Imperial, Mo., Robin (Tom) Heiken of Smithton, Ill., and Penny Kessler of Freeburg, Ill.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carolyn Gettman of Highland, Calif.

Visitation: Friends may visit with the family from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Freeburg, Ill.

Funeral: A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2016 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ with Rev. Earl Crecelius officiating.
