Jack Giannini Obituary

Jack Giannini
Jack L. Giannini of Belleville, Ill., died on Sept. 7, 2009.
An attorney at law having practiced in Belleville at 23 S. First Street, he initially associated with William D. Stiehl, Sr., a prominent local attorney who subsequently was elevated to the position of Federal District Court assigned to court in East St. Louis. For many years, Giannini was a single practitioner, and in 1992, he joined the law firm of a long time friend, William Enyart, on South Second Street in Belleville who subsequently became the Adjutant General of the State of Illinois.
A member of the St. Clair County Bar Association and the Illinois Bar Association, Giannini commenced the practice of law in Belleville in 1971.
He retired that same year from the United States Air Force at Scott Air Force Base after 30 years of military service. He retired at the rank of full Colonel.
Colonel Giannini entered the military service on Nov. 7, 1941, just 30 days before the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. He served in most theaters of operation wherein the Air Force participated. He saw duty in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, India, Burma, China, Vietnam, Philippines, Japan, France, Germany, England, Spain, Turkey, and Greece.
Giannini received two Legion of Merit awards, the Air Medal with five clusters, Bronze Star, and various theater of operations citations. He served on the staffs of and was a personal advisor on publications and morale to commanding Generals of Tactical Air Command, Military Airlift Command, and Military Advisory Group, Vietnam
Rated a command pilot having logged over 5700 hours of flight time in some 22 different types of aircraft, he is credited with 97 combat missions in various combat theaters of operation wherein American forces were engaged in hostile situations.
Giannini was educated in Evansville, Ind., attending Reitz High School. He attended Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge, La., College of William and Mary at Williamsburg, Va., in undergraduate school and Vanderbilt University School of Law in Nashville, Tenn. While in undergraduate studies, he participated in the football program on an athletic scholarship.
While in the practice of law in the Belleville area, he assisted fellow practitioners in family matters akin to the military service.
Giannini was a gifted and prolific writer. Friends remember him typing at his manual typewriter at his desk. He was also a visionary. He saw computers as the typewriters of the future and strongly believed that our children need computer training to be successful. As a result, after his retirement Giannini donated money to many local schools for computers, school libraries, and computer labs. Recipients included the Belleville Public Library, St. James Grade School in Millstadt, Germantown Public School, Belleville District 118 Grade Schools and Junior High Schools, and All Saints Academy in Breese. In addition to his donation for school computers, Giannini made significant contributions to various high schools for their band programs and Okaw Valley Boy Scouts of America. In honor and memory of his deceased son, Roger Giannini, he established a scholarship program at SWIC.
Giannini will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his patriotism, generosity, love of family, gift with words, and marvelous sense of humor. He was one of the heroes of the greatest generation.
Surviving are his wife, Marguerite Giannini and stepdaughter, Janet Rosenstengel.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Ellen, nee Stanfield, Giannini; and his only son, Roger Giannini.

"Sleep well dear Jack, and may bands of angels sing you to your sleep."

This was a very sad time for us all. It was only five days before his birthday, which makes it worse. I'm his great-grandaughter, and I miss him sorely. We share a birthday as well. It's sad for something like this to happen so close.....the last time I saw him, I knew I should've looked back. And yet, stupid little me didn't. My last memory of him is him laying down in bed with his wife holding his hand, looking into his eyes, him returning the gaze.
When a door closes, a new one shall open....thus goes the saying.

Jack,
You're a friend
For all times
If you planted hope today
In any hopeless heart
If someone's burden was lighter
Because you did your part
If you made someone laugh out loud
And kept their tears at bay
Then today has been
For you my friend
A very special day.
You were there for me at a most difficult time in my life and I will never forget your friendship.
Thank you Jack and enjoy flying with the angels and resting in the arms of Christ our Lord.

Not only did many of us lose a friend, but our community lost a great man. While many have read stories of Jack's philanthropy, I feel his greatest treasure was his knowledge, history, and stories that he shared. The walls of his home were like a museum and there was a story to be told with every picture. Always thirsty for knowledge, Jack presented me with the task of teaching him how to use the computer and using e-mail. He would last about a half hour or so before he'd go off on a tangent about something that happened earlier in his life and I'd spend the next hour listening intently to his stories. That is what I'll miss the most.

The children of Belleville and other areas are very fortunate that someone like Jack saw the importance of reading and wanted to make a difference. When Jack came to our office to present a check to buy books for the libraries in our schools, he said something that I'll never forget, "if you teach a child to read, you've given them the world." Jack, you have indeed given that gift to many area children.

Goodbye, my friend.

Dear Jack, I want to thank you for your generous gift to Holy Rosary Catholic School in Fairmont City. God sends angels and you were our angel. I will never forget you as you sat in the office telling me you were here to give us a generous gift of money. You were awesome! Thanks for helping our students and community to become better people. Jack is truly one of the great American heros which built this country and help make it the greatest nation in the world. Jack didn't ask for anything and achieved everything. He was a larger than life character. I was lucky to know Jack through my sister and Father and enjoyed being around Jack. His parties were the best I've ever attended and his great friendship was dear to many many people. The world has lost a hero but Heaven has gained an angel. Long live Jack Giannini. My condolences Marguerite, a truly lovely lady who like Jack treats everyone with respect and honor.

Although I've only known Jack and assisted him since December while he was in deteriorating health, I enjoyed his personality. I much appreciated his sincere expressions of gratitude for the help given him. His love for his wife was evident on his face while visiting her in the hospital. I got to read a book of short stories he authored; he could have made a good living as an author. He has left an unforgettable impression on me, so I offer my condolences to his wife, family, and friends.

Dear Jack,
Know that it was the greatest pleasure to have known you for the past 32 years. From the courthouse to Scott AFB you were there for me. I remember the advice you shared with me about working at the courthouse. I don’t think I can repeat it here, but I shall never forget. How many poor terrified airman over the years I sent to you for help. You probably never got paid from half of them, but you were still willing to help them. You asked me once if I had a Sheppard’s hook that I grabbed these poor souls up for you. Always, always, you took the time to help and mentor the many airmen that were sent your way. I considered you someone I looked up to and respected, not only because of your years of knowledge, but your caring and kindness. You were a great friend to me. Rest in peace dear Jack with the angels and thank you for being in my life.
