James J. Harter Jr., 75, of Smithton, Ill., born July 6, 1941, in O'Fallon, Ill., passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016, at Anderson Hospital, Maryville, Ill.
Jim was an executive vice president of FGM Architects before his retirement. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Smithton, Ill., and also served in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Mr. Harter was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Kay Lorraine Harter, nee Schwarz, whom he married on Thanksgiving Day, November 22, 1962, and who died on April 24, 2013; and his parents, James J. and Cecilia A., nee Joseph, Harter.
Surviving are two sons and a daughter, James J. III (Susan) Harter of Cranston, R.I.; Jeffrey J. (Jill) Harter of St. Louis, Mo., and Jennifer K. (Dr. Alex) Schillinger of Lebanon, Ill.; six grandchildren, Brienne Harter, Samantha Harter, Alexis Schillinger, Madelyn Schillinger, Ethan Schillinger, and Ryan Schillinger; three brothers, William (Janet) Harter of Belleville, Ill., Robert (Mary Beth) Harter of Charlotte, N.C., and Mark (Elaine) Harter of Belleville, Ill.; two sisters-in-law, Jean Ann (Robert) Donley of McKinney, Texas, and Rebecca (Robert) Riess of Jenks, Okla.; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Friends may visit with the family from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016, at George Renner & Sons Funeral Home, Belleville, Ill.
Funeral: Funeral procession will leave at 9:30 a.m. Monday, November 14, 2016, from the funeral home for an 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Smithton, IL, with Fr. James Deiters celebrating. Burial will be at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
