Rev. Dr. John W Constable, 94, of Swansea, Ill., born March 20, 1922, in Baltimore, Maryland, died Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the St. Paul's Home where he resided.
Dr. Constable was an ordained Lutheran pastor, in which he served for over 65 years.
He received his diploma and bachelor of arts degree from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, the master of arts degree from the State University of Iowa and the doctor of philosophy from Ohio State University.
Reverend Constable started five mission churches, one each in Illinois and Iowa, and three in the Columbus, Ohio area. He served eight years as campus pastor at Ohio State and eight years at the State University of Iowa. He served three years as chaplain at the Ohio State Penitentiary before assuming a post teaching church history at Concordia Seminary (St. Louis) and Christ Seminary-Seminex in St. Louis. Until his retirement, he served as professor at the Lutheran Seminary program in Austin, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Anna, nee Saggau, Constable; two daughters, Kathryn (George) Ahrens and Patricia Constable; and a son, James Constable.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Schaper of Leesburg, Fla.; a son, Joel Constable of Austin, Texas; three grandchildren, Andrew Schaper of Australia, Anna (George) Wells of Illinois, and George Ahrens of Kansas City, Mo.; four great-grandchildren; and his life-partner, Delores "Dee" Corbett of Swansea, Ill.

Funeral: A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 23, 2016 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Belleville, Ill., with the Rev. Brian Robison, pastor, officiating, and Bishop S. John Roth of the Central/Southern Illinois ELCA Synod preaching.
