A 74-year-old Pontoon Beach woman and a 45-year-old Collinsville man died Tuesday in separate traffic crashes in Madison County.
Kathryn H. Barkson died Tuesday afternoon when she drove her car into the path of a tractor-trailer, authorities said.
Madison County Coroner Stephen P. Nonn said Barkson was southbound on Illinois 3 in Granite City and turned east onto West Pontoon Road, into the path of a northbound tractor-trailer. Her car was crushed, and she had to be extricated by Granite City firefighters.
Barkson died of massive head and chest injuries. She was alone in her 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier, and there were no other injuries.
Granite City Police referred questions to the coroner's office. The coroner's office said police were continuing their investigation into the crash.
In the other fatality, John E. Dupuis crashed his motorcycle late Monday night in Highland.
Police were notified at 11:57 p.m. that Dupuis, of 7193 Lebanon Road, was traveling west on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle on Illinois 40 when he struck the curb at the intersection of Poplar Street and was ejected.
He was pronounced dead as a result of massive head trauma at 12:45 a.m. Tuesday at the scene. Dupuis was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The Highland Police Department was investigating the crash Tuesday.
Nonn said routine toxicological tests will be conducted in both cases to determine whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crashes.
