John A. Schmiz, 79, of Granite City, Ill., born Oct. 2, 1936, in Alton, Ill., passed away at 8:39 p.m. Monday, May 9, 2016, at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, Ill.
John retired in 1999 from Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon after over 25 years of dedicated service as a groundskeeper. He had also worked many years with Carter Carburetor. The United States veteran proudly served his country in the Army and was also a member of the Teamsters Local 525 in Alton. He enjoyed his days of fishing and hunting and cherished his grandchildren. He will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Mary, nee Grieve, Schmiz; a daughter, Tracy L. Hooker; three sisters, Sr. Catherine Schmiz, Margaret Eichacker and Helen Phillips; and two brothers, Al and Charles Schmiz.
Surviving are his wife, Esther L., nee Chastain, Schmiz, whom he married on Jan. 29, 1992, in Belleville, Ill.; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Debbie and Jim Blackburn of Belleville, Angie and Tim Fowler of Belleville and Lori Jones of Granite City; six grandchildren, Jessica Johnston, Amanda Blackburn, Blake Fowler, Breanna Fowler, Nicholas Jones and Tyler Hooker; three great-grandchildren, Savannah Blackburn, Rebecca Johnston and Cooper Dempsey; two sisters, Pauline Eichacker and Lillian House; many nieces, nephews, other extended family and many dear friends.

Visitation: In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2016, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, Ill.
Funeral: A funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, May 13, 2016 at the funeral home with Reverend Clint Wisdom officiating.
