Joseph C. Portell, 89, of Valmeyer, Ill., formerly of Cahokia, Ill., born Nov. 10, 1926, in Herculaneum, Mo., died Saturday, April 2, 2016, at his residence, surrounded by his loving family.
Joseph was retired from Swift Meat Packing in National City, Ill. He also worked for Sterling Steel and St. Louis Steel, both in Sauget, Ill. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Columbia, Ill., and the Men's Club of the church; a World War II U.S. Army veteran; an avid bowler and bowled in at least two different leagues; and played dart ball for over 40 years. His passionate hobby was fishing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Clara Portell; a brother, Russell Portell; and a sister, Lucille Reichenbacher.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Wanda Portell, nee Pluff; his children, Pamela (Dennis) McFarland of O'Fallon, Mo., and Robert Portell of Waterloo, Ill.; a sister, Carlene Kempf of Millstadt, Ill.; five grandchildren, Denny (Kate) McFarland, Janet (John) Owens, Jennifer (Ben) Edler, Jeff (Lydia) Portell, and Rose Portell; and eight great-grandchildren, Haley, Thomas, Zachary, Jordan, Kyle, Max, Jacob, and Samantha. He was a dear brother-in-law, uncle, cousin, and friend.

Visitation: Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at Braun Family Funeral Home, Columbia, Ill., and from 10 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Columbia, Ill.
Funeral: Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 6, 2016, at the church, with Pastor Steven Theiss officiating. Burial will be in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, St. Louis, Mo.
